About Harling Fringe
A community-led celebration of creativity across theatre, music, dance, and workshops, welcoming everyone to participate.
What is a Fringe festival?
A fringe festival is an open-access arts festival that typically showcases a wide range of performances including theatre, comedy, music, dance, and spoken word. Unlike more traditional festivals, fringe events tend to feature emerging artists, experimental works, and independent productions, offering a platform for creativity and innovation. The term ‘fringe’ originates from the idea of being on the edge or outside of the mainstream arts programming, and these festivals are often known for their informal atmosphere and diverse line-up.
Some acts/events are free, but you have to book, some acts/events are free and you can just drop in and some acts are paid for events. Check when you book tickets.
Fringe festivals usually operate with minimal restrictions on participation, allowing performers to self-produce their shows and secure their own venues. This results in a vibrant, inclusive environment where audiences can discover unique and sometimes unconventional performances. Well known examples include the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which is regarded as the largest arts festival in the world.
